With the American intervention against Islamic State (IS) forces in Iraq, the internet has been flooded with threats against the US. On social media, jihadists are promising that "Iraq is a grave" for U.S. forces, posting pictures of dead soldiers, and calling on "Muslim brothers there to start firing and burning every possible target."

How worried should Americans and other Westerners be? Just as importantly, does the situation in Iraq affect US security? In other words, is this our problem or their problem?

In an unexpected move, media outlets of the Islamic State (IS) have announced that they will be suspending Twitter posts for an unspecified amount of time as the group has moved to a different social media outlet. The Twitter account of al-Battar Media, an Arabic-language group dedicated to promoting IS propaganda, declared in a July 12, 2014 tweet that select IS groups would resort to a European server of the social network Friendica, stating:

As rocket fire from Hamas to Israel escalates, so do the claims from various jihadi groups in the area. Following the launch of a recent military operation in Gaza, more than half a dozen jihadi groups—either affiliated with al-Qaeda (AQ) or the Islamic State (IS)—have been flooding the internet with threats against Israel and claims of firing rockets at Israel as if they were the ones leading the war, and not Hamas.

On July 4, a group of six fighters reportedly attacked the al-Wadia border post, two of whom managed to enter the Saudi city of Sharurah and blew themselves up after police surrounded them inside a government building. Two days later, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released a set of pictures featuring scenes from the attack.

Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) spokesman Abu Muhammad al-‘Adnani’s 34-minute speech titled “This is the Promise of Allah”—which declares ISIS as Caliphate under the name “Islamic State,” along with ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s status as the Caliph—has reignited the recently quieted conflict between ISIS, al-Qaeda (AQ), and AQ’s Syrian branch, al-Nusra Front.
