Al Qaeda’s leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, announced the formation of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent in September of 2014. There was a two-year long effort to bring the mujahedeen in the Indian Subcontinent together in order to form a single group. Targeting the Pakistani military and anti- Al Qaeda groups, AQIS is an official Al Qaeda branch and attempts to form an Islamic state in the region. (Read more on State.gov)
